Hermon Atkins MacNeil (American, 1866 to 1947)

Hermon Atkins MacNeil was born in Massachusetts and educated at the Normal Art School in Boston. His studies in Paris and Rome brought him recognition in both European and American exhibitions, including the Paris Salons, the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the 1915 Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, MacNeil taught and worked in Chicago where he began depicting his best known subjects, Native Americans, inspired by Buffalo bill’s Wild West Show. He was an acclaimed portrait sculptor and the designer of the United States twenty-five cent piece know as the Liberty quarter.
