George Lafayette Clough (1824-1901)
Born in Auburn, New York on the 18th of September 1824, George Clough was a noteworthy painter of landscapes, genre scenes and portraits. He opened his own studio in Auburn in 1844 and first exhibited at the National Academy in 1847. Three years later he went abroad for a year of study and travel.
Upon his return to America, Clough was inspired by his native surroundings in Auburn to take up landscape painting. In 1865/1866, he relocated to New York City where his focus turned toward genre scenes of more sophisticated urban subjects and depictions on the local environs. The paintings Clough exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association during the late 1860′s and 1870′s were well received by critics of the time. George Clough died in 1901.
