Hans Mangelsdorf (German, American, New Orleans, 1903 to 1991) (German, American, 1903 to 1991)
An accomplished New Deal artist of the 1930s and 1940s, German-born Hans Mangelsdorf received his formal art training in Germany and Vienna. In 1929, Mangelsdorf immigrated to America and settled in Louisiana, living in both Shreveport and New Orleans. While in Shreveport he worked as the Assistant Art Curator at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum where he also was enlisted to paint a series of dioramas for the Works Progress Administration. From 1939 to 1963, Dr. Henry Brainard Wright supervised the creation of the dioramas for the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum by many leading Louisiana artists of the day including Conrad Albrizio, Duncan Ferganus and Mangelsdorf. While in New Orleans, Mangelsdorf created murals for the Rabouin Trade School as well as exhibiting with Art Association of New Orleans, Southern States Art League, and in 1939 at a one-man show at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
