Myles Birket Foster
Born in 1825, Myles Birket Foster was given a Quaker education and apprenticed to the wood engraver Ebenezer Landells until about 1850. He worked exclusively as an engraver and a black and white illustrator throughout the 1850s. Foster taught himself to paint in watercolors and began to actively exhibit after 1859. He traveled considerably on the continent starting in 1852, visiting Venice on several occasions, and was commissioned to make a series of 50 paintings of the city. Foster’s early experiences as an engraver left their mark, as his paintings are minutely accurate and small in scale.
