Bernard Buffet (French, 1928 to 1999)
Born in Paris, in 1928, Bernard Buffet was one of the most celebrated painters in 20th-century France. He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1944, where he studied art for two years. After his brief education, Buffet worked mostly on his own producing paintings, lithographs, etchings, and sculptures many of which addressed the turmoil of the post-war period. His works are often somber, done in grays and neutral tones, with a flattened space and sharply contoured forms.
