Mervin M. Jules (1912-1994)

Mervin Jules was born in Baltimore in 1912. The son of a men’s haberdasher, Jules was encouraged by his parents to pursue a musical career. By the time he graduated from Baltimore City College in 1930, he was determined to paint and teach art. After completing a four-year course at the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts, and the Art Students League in New York (under Thomas Hart Benton). By 25, he had mounted a one-man exhibition in New York. His career as painter, printmaker, illustrator and art teacher spanned more than five decades. His career included exhibitions at numerous prominent museums and galleries and his work is currently in the collections of such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress.
