Luigi Rist -born Louis G. Rist (1888-1959)
Luigi Rist was born in 1888 in Newark, New Jersey where he lived most of his life. He moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania from Vermont five years prior to his death in 1959. He changed his name to Luigi after returning from France in the 1930′s. Rist studied at the Newark Technical School, Newark, N.J. and at the Grand Central Art School in New York. He was highly acclaimed for his innovations and success in the Japanese manner of printing in color from woodblocks. Rist was unique in that he was not only the artist but also the wood carver and printer. His works are represented in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Library of Congress, the New York and Newark Public Libraries as well as museums across the country.
