Clifton A. Wheeler (1883-1953)

Clifton Wheeler was born in Hadley, Indiana, and studied under William Forsyth, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. While in New York, some of his classmates were George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, and Edward Hopper. After studying some in Italy and France, he married fellow artist Hilah Drake, and the couple settled in Irvington, Indiana. Wheeler taught at the Herron Art Institute and Butler University. He was a member of the Portfolio Club, Indiana Artists Club, and the Society of Western Artists. He exhibited at the Hoosier Salon.
