Charles Edenshaw – Daxhiigang (1839-1924)
Charles Edenshaw or Daxhiigang, was a Haida chief as well as a highly accomplished carver, painter, and jeweler. Franz Boaz wrote of Edenshaw as “the best carver and painter among the Haida” (Hoover 1983: 63). His carving ability ranks among the best due to not only his technical abilities but his ability to render traditional forms in a manner consistent with his cultural upbringing, creating masterpieces for the tourist market (Hoover 1995: 45).
