Jonathan Gostelow
According to American Cabinetmakers: Marked American Furniture, 1640-1940 by William C. Ketchum, Jr., Jonathan Gostelowe (1745-1795) was a well-known and highly respected Philadelphia cabinetmaker, but few marked examples of his work are known.
Ketchum notes one label reads, “Jonathan Goftelowe,/CABINET AND CHAIR-MAKER/At his fhop in CHURCH ALLEY, about midway between/Second and Third-streets…/BEGS leave to inform his former cuftomers and the/Public in general, That he hath again resumed his/occupation at the above mentioned place. A renewal of their/favors will be thankfully received, and his beft endeavors/fhall be ufed to give fatisfaction to thofe who pleafe to emply/him.”
Ketchum’s research showed Gostelowe worked from Front Street before joining the Continental Arm in 1776. After the war, he was at the Church Alley address from 1738 to 1789, and at 66 Market Street until he retired in 1793.
