Patton, Matthew – American Cabinetmaker – Ohio

Matthew Patton (1778-1856)

Patton , who came to Dayton, Ohio from Lexington, Virginia in 1805, advertised regularly in local newspapers, and is listed as a cabinetmaker in the 1820 Federal Census of Manufacturers. Patton was also a very prominent member of the Dayton community, serving as president of the Select Council, a member of the Moral Society, and an elder in the Presbyterian Church. With such standing, it is no wonder that other area cabinetmakers began to incorporate some of Patton’s design ideas into their own work. As a result, many bonnet chests that have surfaced in recent years, were probably made by other cabinetmakers in Dayton, Ohio and Montgomery County who were influenced by Patton.
