Herter Brothers
One of the Victorian era’s leading interior design and custom furniture manufactures, Herter Brothers operated in New York City from 1865 to 1907.
Gustave Herter immigrated to America in 1848 from Suttgart, Germany and quickly became one of the leading cabinetmakers and interior designers in New York. His elder brother Christian immigrated in 1859 and joined his brothers firm in 1864 where the pair created entire interiors for some of the most prominent names, including Vanderbilt, Gould, and Morgan. The hallmark of their work is ornate marquetry inlay. Christian had spent time in working in Paris and the Herter designs were heavily influenced by the French rococo revivial and other Continental trends
In 1870 Gustave retired to Stuttgart and Christian ran the business alone.
