Stickley Brothers Furniture Co.
Two of the five famous Stickley Brothers, Albert and John George Stickley, founded the Stickley Brothers Furniture Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1891, both having worked with their three other brothers in a similar company in New York. John George returned to New York in 1900 to form the L. and J. G. Stickley Furniture Co. with his brother Leopold. Albert remained in Michigan and operated the “Brothers” company until he died in 1928.
Initially producing Colonial Revival chairs and tables, the Company started introducing “lines” of furniture in 1900 with its “Mission” furniture. The “Quaint” line was introduced in 1903 and was followed by the Adam Colonial line in 1925.
During its twenty-two year run, the Quaint line featured many styles: Quaint Mission (1903), the Quaint Arts & Crafts line (1904), the Quaint Tudor line (1909) and the Quaint Manor line (1914). The latter introducing an oriental design influence to the Company’s previously all American pallet. The Adam Colonial line returned the Company to its design roots with products based on American and English 18th century designs featuring ivory, “Peacock” and “Colonial Blue” as the primary colors.
