Wallace Nutting was born in Rockbottom, Massachusetts, in 1861. He was ordained a Congregational Minister in 1887 and while he appeared to excel in this profession, he continually declined calls from one church or another all over the country. He finally settled in 1894 in Providence, Rhode Island, as minister of the Union Church. Tuttle, James Chapman – Windsor Chair Maker

James Chapman Tuttle

James Chapman Tuttle (circa 1772 to 1849) has been credited as the only identified maker of Windsor chairs originating in Salem, Massachusetts. Nancy Goyne Evans in American Windsor Chairs notes that Evans probably marketed the fan-back Windsor first. She adds, “Tuttle’s use of eight spindles in his fan backs when odd numbers were commoner recalls both Boston production and the late work of the Tracy family.”

Tucker, Elisha – American Cabinetmaker – Massachusetts

Elisha Tucker, Cabinetmaker

A master cabinetmaker of the Federal period, Elisha Tucker worked at 40 Middle Street, Boston circa 1810. During this period he also partnered with Jonathan Griffin (Beverly, Massachusetts 1767 to 1843) for a brief period. Two Tucker labeled card tables are known, as is one labeled Tucker & Griffin.

Cabinetmaker John Sprosen was active in Philadelphia circa 1783 to 1788, and in New York City from 1789 to 1798. His Windsor chairs are branded “I. Sprosen” under the seat.

Sormani, Paul – French Furniture Maker
