Harry Ross

Harry Ross was from Norway, Maine and before his death was well known as a carver throughout North America. His clients included Clark Gable, Roy Rogers and Ernest Hemmingway. In 1949 Ross won the International Decoy Makers Contest with his carvings.

Reed, Ernest (Popeye) – American Sculptor

Ernest “Popeye” Reed (1919-1985)

Ernest “Popeye” Reed was born in Jackson, Ohio in 1919. Reed carved both wood and stone, producing major works as well as souvenir items. He died in South Carolina in 1985.

Ralph Raby Collection – Provenance

The Ralph Raby Collection

Ralph Raby is a direct descendant of the Chicago retail shoe magnates George and Joseph Bullock. The Bullocks were typical upper-class Victorians, with a sophisticated eye for fine furniture, art and decorations who traveled extensively throughout Europe. The majority of the Raby collection was assembled by the brothers and their wives in the 1870′s and 1880′s.

Bellamy, John – Woodcarver of Maine

John Bellamy

John Haley Bellamy, master ship carver of Kittery Point, Maine produced some of the most outstanding decorative carving for ships and buildings during the last half of the 19th century. Bellamy was best known from his carved eagles which were characterized by concave wings, a deep cut eye and accentuated beak. Rufus Porter (1792 to 1884),

Rufus Porter, born in Massachusetts, began his career painting houses and signs, as well as making shoes and farming. He began painting portraits in New Haven, Connecticut where he also made fiddles. He traveled throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic painting portraits, landscapes, murals, and creating silhouettes with a camera obscura he designed himself. Daniel Muller came to America from Germany in 1881. He was inspired by Civil War Statuary for his carousel carvings. He used authentic military equipment to decorate his carousel horses. In 1903 Daniel began the D. C. Muller & Bro. Co. The company closed in 1917 when materials became difficult to acquire due to the war with Germany. Lewis Miller (1796-1882)

Lewis was from York County, Pennsylvania and a carpenter by trade. He completed thousands of works of art before his death in 1882. The Historical Society of York County, Pennsylvania has a large collection of Miller’s work including a hand carved and painted pediment with figures and animals.

Mahantongo Valley Pennsylvania

Some of the most distinctive and elaborately decorated furniture created in early nineteenth century America originated in what is known as the Mahantongo or Schwaben Creek Valley of central Pennsylvania. Today, this body of work constitutes highly revered Pennsylvania German material culture. The majority of which can only be found in major museum collections such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.
