Paul Patkotak (1892-1980)
Paul Patkotak was educated in the Catholic faith after missionaries visited his home village of Wainwright, Alaska. In 1911 he attended a seminary school in Seattle and returned home to Alaska spreading the Word of the Gospel. As a self-taught artist, Brother Paul stated in 1958, “I do not draw anymore. My eyes are getting dull.” (Lester 1995: 442) Patkotak’s work has been exhibited at the Philbrook Art Center, Alaska Native Service Office, and at the Wainwright School.
