Cornelius “Connie” Hicks (American, 1899 to 1931)

A painter and illustrator who died at the height of his career, only 32 years old. Educated at Pratt Art Institute in New York City, he later became an instructor there. He may be the best known for his illustration of the official Red Cross poster depicting a nurse in the foreground with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the background. Hicks also illustrated for Collier’s, Mentor, Liberty and Elks magazines.
