Charles Paul Gruppe (1860 to 1940)
Charles Paul Gruppe was born in Picton, Canada in 1860. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Rochester, New York. When he was 21, he traveled to Europe to study art. Primarily a Tonalist landscape and marine painter, Charles Paul is closely identified with the Dutch School of painting and lived in the Netherlands for over 20 years. His soft-colored palette and subject matter show the dark tonal qualities of the Netherland painters. He received the unusual honor as an American, to be elected to the Pulchre Studio. He is the father of the painter Emile Albert Gruppe.
