Clifford Kennedy Berryman (1869-1949)

Clifford Berryman was a self-taught cartoonist and illustrator. He began his life in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Patent Office. In 1891, he began his cartooning career at the Washington Post, where remained until 1907. He spent the remainder of his career at the Washington Evening Star. He is best known for his 1902 cartoon in the Post depicting Teddy Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear cub. This cartoon would inspire the first depiction of the Teddy Bear by Berryman, and the subsequent creation of the still-popular toy.
