Derriere le Miroir

Derriere le Miroir

Derriere le Miroir was an art magazine published between 1946 and 1982 (253 issues) by the French publisher and gallery owner Aime Maeght. The Galerie Maeght, in Paris since 1945, exhibited and promoted names, such as Bonnard, Matisse, Braque, Leger, Steinberg, Chagall, Bram Van Velde, Miro, Kandinsky, Giacometti, Ubac, Bazaine, Calder, Derain, Chillida, Tapies, among so many other artists. The publication Derriere le Miroir, was the outcome of the gallery owner’s passion for publishing, and rapidly became the catalogue for the exhibitions held at the Gallery.

The magazine, itself designed as an art object sumptuously presented in a large (38 x 28 cm) format, is illustrated with original lithographs as well as a number of reproductions. Poets and writers like Aragon, Beckett, Char, Eluard, Prevert, Queneau, Reverdy, Sartre, contributed with unpublished texts. All the other copies of the magazine belong to the Guita and Jose Mindlin collection in Sao Paulo.
